CINEMA

Work created in 2025/8/2

'CINEMA' is an experimental internet art project that re-examines the essence of media experience in the digital age. As the title suggests, it claims to be 'cinema,' but it fundamentally dismantles the traditional concept of film and presents a new form of visual experience.
This work is realized through the parallel operation of multiple algorithms. First, language is randomly generated—artificial words such as “voyojucu wofima kanugobi”—and mechanically spoken using speech synthesis. This artificial language is disconnected from any existing semantic system, emphasizing only the phonetic aspect of language. At the same time, what is likely video input from a webcam is transformed into abstract pixel patterns, expanding on the screen as colorful, cloud-like flows of particles.
Ambient sounds generated by Tone.js simulate natural environments, ranging from “wind” to “caves,” lending the piece a sense of spatial depth. These sound elements periodically change and are synchronized with shifts in the visual patterns. The three elements—speech synthesis, visual effects, and ambient sounds—change autonomously and interact with each other, generating an unpredictable and one-of-a-kind experience.
Traditional cinema is a medium where narrative is constructed through artificial structures such as script, filming, and editing. However, “CINEMA” entrusts these elements to algorithms, completely excluding narrative meaning. What the audience experiences is a purely sensory interaction: constantly shifting color patterns, recitations of artificial language, and ambient sounds.
This work pursues an aesthetic unique to digital technology. The granular quality of pixels, the mechanical textures of synthesized speech, and unpredictable algorithmic changes—all expressions impossible with analog media. Rather than concealing the characteristics of digital media, the artist foregrounds them, creating a new kind of aesthetic experience.
“CINEMA” embodies a “post-anthropocentric” approach in media theory. Instead of making human intention and emotion the center of expression, it delegates the act of expression to the technological system itself, suggesting a new relationship between humans and technology. The audience is not a passive observer but rather a co-creator, constructing their own unique experience through ongoing interaction with the ever-changing system.
This work is an important experiment in expanding the possibilities of internet art. By offering a highly experimental media experience through the everyday interface of a web browser, it blurs the boundaries between art and technology. Because the work is generated completely in real time, it is impossible to have the same experience twice, redefining the concept of “singularity” in the digital era.
“CINEMA” can be seen as an ambitious project that goes beyond the boundaries of cinema as a medium, suggesting new possibilities enabled by digital technology. The questions raised by the work prompt fundamental reflection not only on the future of media art but also on the evolving relationship between humans and technology.
