Ningyo (Mermaid) is a web-based work that continuously generates unpredictable chimeric beings through randomly combined image fragments. Violin with fish tail, corn with ears, spoon with fins—these chance encounters between disparate elements reinterpret the mermaid as a liminal existence. Against AI generation's predictability, the work deliberately chooses dissonance and error. A simple algorithm questions the fixity of categories and boundaries, quietly suggesting that all existence is potentially chimeric. With monochrome aesthetics and ambient sound, each generated form possesses its own strange dignity, like specimens in a surrealist natural history museum. This minimalist yet conceptually rich experiment explores digital-age generative art's possibilities without relying on machine learning.
