Code-based Print Theater

Work created in 2026/2/21

”Code-based Print Theater” transforms webcam images into print-like textures through multi-layer decomposition, while simultaneously generating music from color analysis data. The layering process of printmaking—the accumulation of successive prints—is translated into musical performance unfolding along a temporal axis. By synchronizing the visual process of sequential layer construction with the progression of generated music, static print media metamorphoses into dynamic theatrical space. The work employs formant synthesis to vocalize traditional Japanese color names, creating a synesthetic performance where vision, sound, and language intersect. Print techniques like silkscreen inherently involve temporal accumulation—each color layer printed sequentially. This piece makes that temporal dimension explicit by rendering it as musical time. The algorithmic transparency—displaying processing parameters and layer counts—demystifies the conversion process, while the mechanical quality of synthesized color names emphasizes the friction inherent in translating cultural concepts into digital systems. The ”theater” emerges from this orchestration of multiple sensory and temporal streams, all derived from a single photographic moment.
