Generate Sound Sculpture 02
Work created in 2025/5/10
Generate Sound Sculpture 02 is an experimental work that explores the fusion of sound and form within a digital space. In this piece, randomly generated rod-like three-dimensional structures are enveloped in a translucent membrane and presented together with music derived from their shapes.
The essence of the work lies in 'generation.' With the press of a single button, a new structure and music are simultaneously created, allowing the viewer to experience a once-in-a-lifetime combination. The arrangement of the rod-like structures changes each time, and the musical parameters also shift accordingly. Elements such as tempo, complexity, sustain, note length, melodic scale, and rhythmic density are all determined based on the form of the structure.
From a technical perspective, the work integrates 3D rendering and real-time shape generation using Three.js, along with a generative music system powered by Tone.js. Particularly noteworthy is the method of expressing the 'envelopment,' which allows viewers to customize their visual experience by adjusting the smoothness, transparency, and fit of the membrane.
By exploring the interrelationship between sound and form, this work demonstrates the potential of generative approaches in digital art. The inorganic rod-like structures, when wrapped in a translucent membrane, take on an organic impression, and the accompanying music, rather than sounding mechanically cold, possesses a certain warmth. This can also be interpreted as an expression of 'vitality' within a digital environment.
What this work offers is not merely a visual or auditory experience, but a space for the aesthetics generated by algorithms and the viewer’s active engagement with them. By adjusting parameters and attempting new generations, the viewer assumes the role of a co-creator of the work.
Oscillating between randomness and deterministic algorithms, this piece embodies the theme of 'control and chance' in digital art. This resonates with contemporary generative AI art, positioning the work as an attempt to discover poetic moments within technical systems.
